Rainbow Baby Dress
This is a very cute dress perfect for pictures or any special occasion.
I made mine in this trendy retro stripes color, but you can use any color you like;
as long as you use worsted weight yarn for 0-3 months or dk for newborn size
Instructions: 0-3 months with worsted weight yarn #4 or Newborn with dk yarn #3

Level: Intermediate
Materials:
- Retro Stripes yarn, this is Red Heart brand. (You will use about 4 oz)
- I Love This Yarn brand from Hobby Lobby size #3 (about 1 oz )
- Crochet hook: 4.5 mm
- Thread and needle to attach button
- One small button 5/8 in (16mm)
- Ruler
Crochet Gauge: 13 double crochet x 7 Rows = 4"
Abbreviations:
- ch - chain
- sp – space
- beg- beginning
- sk - skip
- st - stitch
- sl st - slip stitch
- hdc - half double crochet
- dc - double crochet
- dc V st- double crochet V stitch (1 dc, ch 1, 1 for the top & 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc for the skirt)
- tc - triple crochet (also known as treble crochet)
- shell st – shell stitch (3dc, ch 2, 3 dc worked in the same space
or stitch)
- * = repeat whatever follows the* as indicated.
Special Stitch
Tc V st with picot,
Special Stitch
Tc V st with (triple crochet with picot st) make 1 tc, ch 3 insert hook
back into the center of the base ch, yarn over, pull through all loops
on hook, make 1 tc in the same st.
Notes:
- Ch 1 or ch 2, at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch
unless specified.
- Weave in ends or bury in ends as you work.
- Measure chest when you finish round 5 to make sure that you are
getting the correct chest measurement.
- Make shell sts into the ch 1 space of the previous shell st.
- You will use a 4.0 mm for newborn and 4.5 mm hook for a 0 - 3 months dress. Going up a hook size will create a larger dress.

Ch 54, 1 dc in the third ch from the hook (button hole made), 1 dc in each of the next 6 sts, 1 dc V st, 1 dc in the next 12 sts, 1 dc V st, 1 dc in the next 12 sts, 1 dc V st, 1 dc in the next 12 sts, 1 dc V st, 1 dc in the last 6 sts. Turn your work
Row 2
Ch 2 (does not count as a st here and throughout the pattern), 1 dc in the same ch 2 st, 1 dc in the next 7 sts, 1 dc V st (mark this st), 1 dc V st in each of the next 14 sts, 1 dc V st (mark this st), 1 dc in each of the next 14 sts, 1 dc V st (mark this st), 1 dc V st in each of the next 14 sts, 1 dc V st (mark this st), 1 dc in the last 7 sts. Joining the Sleeves

Ch 2, 1 dc in the same ch 2 st, 1 dc in the next 9 sts, 1 dc V st in the ch 1 of the dc V st from previous row, ch 2, sk the next 14 shell sts, 1 dc V st in the ch 1 of the dc V st from previous row (first arm opening), 1 dc in the next 20 sts, 1 dc V st in the ch 1 sp of the dc V st from previous round, ch 2, sk all the shell sts from previous row, 1 dc V st in the ch 1 sp of the dc V st from previous row (second arm opening), 1 dc in the last 10 sts. Sl st on top of first dc to begin working around.
Round 5
Ch 2, 1 dc in the same ch 2 st, 1 dc in the next 11 sts, 1 dc in the ch 1 of the dc V st from previous round, 3 dc in the ch 2 sp that you did in between the dc Vsts in previous round, 1 dc in the ch 1 sp of the next dc V st from previous round, 1 dc in each of the next 20 sts, 1 dc in the ch 1 of the dc V st from previous round, 3 dc in the ch 2 sp that you did in between the dc Vsts in previous round, 1 dc in the ch 1 sp of the next dc V st from previous round, 1 dc in each of the next 11 sts. Ch 2, 1 dc in the same ch 2 st, 1 dc in the next 49 sts. Sl st on top of first dc to end this round. (50 dc)

Ch 1, 1 sc in the same ch 1 st, 1 sc in the next st 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st, *1 sc in the next 4 sts, 2 sc in the next st. Repeat from* 14 times. Sl st on tp of the first sc to end this round. (60 sc)
Skirt Begins Here
Round 9
Ch 1, 4 dc in the same ch 2 sp, 1 dc in the next st, * ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in the next st, 4 dc in the next st, 1 dc in the next st. Repeat from * 12 times. Ch 1, sk 1, 4 dc in the next st, ch 1, sk 1. Sl st on top of the first dc to end this round. (60 dc)
Round 10-15
Ch 1, 1 dc in the same ch 1 st, 4 dc in the next st, 1 dc in the next st, ch 1, sk 1, (the ch 1, sk 1 must align with the ch 1 sp from previous round here and throughout the pattern) * 1 dc in the next st, 4 dc in the next st, 1 dc in the next st, ch 1, sk 1. Repeat from* all the way around. (60 dc)
Round 16
Ch 1, 1 hdc in the same ch st, 1 hdc in the next 4 sts, * ch 1, sk 1 (this must align with the ch 1 sp that you did on previous round), 1 hdc in each of the next 6 sts. Repeat from* 11 times. Ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in the last 5 sts, ch 1, sk 1. Sl st on top of the first hdc to end this round. (60 hdc)
Round 17
Ch 1, 1 dc in the same st back loop only, 1 dc on each st around working on the back loop only. Sl st on top of first dc to end this round.
Round 18
Ch 1, 1 hdc in the same ch 1 st, 1 dc in the next 2 sts, 1 tc Vst with picot, 1 dc in the next 2 sts, * 1 hdc, 1 dc in the next 2 sts, 1 tc V st with picot, 1 dc in the next 2 sts. Repeat from * 18 times, 1 dc in the next st, 1 hdc in the last st. Sl st on top of the first hdc to end this round. (19 tc V st with picot, 77 dc, 20 hdc). Fasten off here.
Neck Edge
With the back of dress facing you, attach retro stripes yarn to the upper, left corner (where the opening for the button ends). See Picture
Row 1
Ch 1, 1 sc all the way around. Go through both loops on the last st, so the opening for the button can be more noticeable. Fasten off here
Flower Instructions
Ch 3, 10 hdc in the third ch from the hook. Sl st on top of the first hdc to end this round.
Round 2
For this round work on front loop only, *Ch 7, 1 sc in the next st. Repeat from * 9 times.
Round 3
Sc on the back loop where you made the first ch 7 to begin the second round of the flower. * Ch 3, sk 1, sc on the next st. Repeat from* 4 times. Sc on the first sc that you did at the beg. You should have 5 sps of ch 3.
Ch 1, make 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 tc v st with picot, 2 dc, 1 hdc in each ch 3 sp from previous round to form 5 petals. Fasten off here.
Finishing
Weave in any end that you may have forgotten.
Sew the button on the back.
Attach the flower.
